Design Technology
At Hollingwood, our Design and Technology curriculum inspires children to become creative, confident, and innovative problem-solvers. Carefully planned from Early Years through to Year 6, the curriculum builds knowledge and practical skills progressively while ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND, have equal access to high-quality learning experiences.
Through engaging, hands-on projects, children learn to design and make purposeful, functional products for real users. They develop key transferable skills including teamwork, creativity, communication, decision-making, resilience, and leadership. Pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their ideas by designing, testing, evaluating, and refining their work, helping them understand the importance of innovation and continuous improvement.
Across the five areas of Design and Technology—food, structures, mechanisms, textiles, and electrical systems—children develop confidence in using tools safely, selecting appropriate materials, and applying technical knowledge. Learning is enriched through links to real-life designers and careers, helping pupils understand how design and technology shapes the world around them.
The impact of our curriculum is reflected in pupils’ enthusiasm, confidence, and growing independence. Through practical learning experiences, including DT enrichment events with families, children develop valuable skills that support success across the wider curriculum and prepare them for future education, employment, and everyday life.
