Long Term Plan Y5

HELPING YOUR CHILD AT HOME

Year 5 is an important year for developing independence, confidence and strong learning habits. Small amounts of regular practice at home can make a big difference.

READ EVERY DAY

Aim for 20 minutes of reading every day.

Encourage your child to:

  • Read independently and regularly.
  • Read a variety of books, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, newspapers and magazines.
  • Talk about what they have read.
  • Explain the meaning of unfamiliar words.
  • Make predictions and explain their ideas.
  • Find evidence in the text to support their answers.
  • Discuss characters, settings, themes and events.
  • Read aloud occasionally to develop fluency and expression.

Ask: “What makes you think that?” or “Can you find evidence in the book?”

 SPELLING & WRITING

Help your child practise their weekly spellings and develop their vocabulary.

Encourage them to:

  • Learn common Year 5/6 spelling patterns and words.
  • Look for prefixes, suffixes, word families and spelling rules.
  • Use a dictionary and thesaurus independently.
  • Write for different purposes – stories, letters, reports, explanations, diaries and opinions.
  • Write several paragraphs and organise ideas clearly.
  • Use ambitious and precise vocabulary.
  • Check their own spelling and punctuation.
  • Use punctuation accurately, including commas, apostrophes, speech marks and brackets where appropriate.
  • Present their work neatly and take pride in handwriting.

MATHS

TIMES TABLES ARE STILL VERY IMPORTANT

Encourage your child to:

  • Know all multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12.
  • Recall facts quickly and accurately.
  • Practise mental addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Solve problems involving more than one step.
  • Explain how they worked out an answer.
  • Work confidently with fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Find fractions and percentages of amounts.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide using appropriate methods.
  • Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000.
  • Work with money, including calculating change and comparing prices.
  • Read timetables and calculate durations.
  • Measure, estimate and compare.
  • Explore perimeter, area, shape and angles.Read and interpret tables, charts and
  • graphs.

Everyday maths: cooking, shopping, budgeting, measuring, telling the time and working out journeys are all great opportunities to practise.

 TALK, TALK, TALK!

Talking helps children develop their vocabulary and reasoning skills.

Ask questions such as:

  • “Why do you think that?”
  • “How do you know?”
  • “Can you explain your answer?”
  • “What evidence do you have?”
  •  “Is there another way?”
  • “What might happen if…?”
  • “Can you use a better word to describe that?”

Encourage your child to explain their thinking rather than simply give an answer.

LEARN THROUGH EVERYDAY LIFE

Learning happens everywhere.

Encourage your child to:

  • Help with shopping and calculate totals, change and discounts.
  • Help with cooking and measuring ingredients.
  • Read signs, maps, timetables and instructions.
  • Discuss news and events in an age-appropriate way.
  • Visit the library or explore museums and places of interest.
  • Research things they are interested in.
  • Write shopping lists, messages, instructions or short reviews.
  • Take responsibility for organising their belongings and routines.
  • Complete simple tasks independently.

A great daily routine:

  •  20 minutes reading
  •  Spelling practice
  •  Times tables / mental maths
  •  A little problem-solving
  •  Talk about what they have learned
