Phonics and Early Reading

At Hollingwood, all children are supported to become fluent, confident, and enthusiastic readers through a structured, phonics-led approach. Using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, teaching begins in Nursery and builds progressively, with daily phonics, targeted support, and regular assessment ensuring no child falls behind. Reading practice sessions focus on decoding, fluency, and comprehension, using carefully matched texts. Strong emphasis is placed on language development and high-quality teaching. As a result, pupils develop accuracy, fluency, and confidence in reading and spelling. They view themselves as readers for pleasure and purpose, showing resilience and independence in their reading journey.
